Term Definition

The Project Management Institute (PMI) is an international organization advancing the professional field of project management. It does this by setting standards, through certified education and development, and by conducting research and professional conferencing. The PMI is considered the world leader in project management advocacy and professional development.

Standards
In an effort to institute generally accepted project management practices as well as develop a common project management language, or lexicon, the PMI publishes the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide. The PMBOK Guide is now in its 4th edition with over 2 million copies in circulation worldwide, and has been recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

In addition to the guide, the PMI maintains a current library of 11 global standards documents addressing the themes of Projects, Programs, People, Organizations and Profession.

Education and Certification
The PMI maintains a program of professional credentials which are recognized worldwide by individuals and organizations. This credentials program holds an ISO 9001 certification in Quality Management Systems.

The credentials certifications are geared towards project managers with different levels of experience:

Research and Conferences
The PMI supports the PMI Research Program, which sponsors research projects which advance the project, program and portfolio management body of knowledge.
In July, 2008, a multi-year, multi-million dollar research study was published, Researching the Value of Project Management. This study set out to prove that solid project management is necessary to organizational success, and involved more than 60 case studies and more than 440 personal interviews.

Four PMI global congresses are held each year in different regions of the world. They are open to anyone and can contribute Professional Development Units (PDUs) to PMI certification holders who attend.
