By using a heartwarming picture of a mother and daughter instead of a stock photo, United We Dream is presenting the national fight for immigration reform as a personal issue. People are more likely to support an organization that cares about them as an individual rather than just another statistic.
Use humor to make a statement
Reform Immigration for America (RI4A) asked people to call the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, to ask him to stand up against anti-immigration representatives of the Republican Party. The image of Boehner’s face on the Wizard of Oz’s Cowardly Lion is humorous and lightens the mood to make calling Boehner seem less intimidating. The prominent mobile call to action paired with a strong image and a clear statement definitely caught people’s attention and helped the campaign go viral.
Give people a good reason to get involved
Oregon United for Marriage is using text messaging to inform supporters of the latest updates in the fight for same-sex marriage in the state. Their simple call to action gives a clear incentive for signing up for text messages – supporters will get updated on the status of the law as soon as a ruling is issued. By appealing to our need to be “in the know” at all times, this call to action conveys a sense of urgency that makes people want to sign up for mobile alerts.
Make it easy for people to take action
Engine Advocacy created a bright, catchy web form to get people to call their senator for the Fix Patents campaign. To make it as easy as possible, the form asks for just a cell phone number and a zip code. After completing the form, the caller receives a text message with the number for their state senator’s office and a pop-up on the web page displays five simple talking points to help the caller through the entire process. Advocacy is now easier than ever!
Greenpeace caught more than one person’s attention when they put their mobile call to action on a blimp. By using an interesting vehicle to display their message, they guaranteed that people would read their call to action. Brainstorm unusual ways to get people to see your call to action and they’ll be more likely to want to text in!
