The rules of marketing are changing.

Historically, marketers have used advertising—direct mail, banner ads, TV commercials—to deliver messages about their products. This intrusive approach has become less effective as the Internet has put customers in control.

As a result, marketers are increasingly practicing content marketing, publishing digital content based on customers’ needs and interests rather than a company’s products or services. As customers engage with that content, marketers develop deeper relationships with them in order to meet their organizations’ goals, such as closing new sales.

The Revolution

This isn’t a minor shift or a simple new tactic. It’s revolutionary change, flipping the marketing world on its head in three major ways:

  • Content marketing forces marketers to be more attuned to customers’ needs. Instead of buying a customer’s attention through advertising, marketers must earn it.
  • Content marketing is the new path to success. As it becomes more effective and cost-efficient, and traditional marketing becomes more expensive and less effective, content will remain essential to every marketing strategy.
  • Content marketing is making the world a better place. Instead of interrupting and annoying, marketers must inform and delight. How wonderful!

The stories behind this revolution deserve to be documented, and that’s what we’re doing here at the Marketeer.
 A number of websites offer marketers tips and how-tos on content marketing (we read many of them, too). We’re different.

We’ll be doing less telling and more showing, chronicling the revolution’s pioneers, its innovators, and its thought leaders—brand marketers who have found success creating content and agency leaders who are developing new strategies for it. These are the people on the front lines of the content marketing revolution. We believe everyone can learn from their stories and even more people will be inspired to join the ranks.
