You have spent ages prepping your content and ensuring your data is up-to-date, and well targeted. But wouldn’t it be great to have your email read by more people than just the original mailing list? A few simple clicks in the MessageFocus HTML editor and this can happen!

No matter whom your target audience is, from teens to adults, if someone is receiving emails they will most definitely have access to social media, and usually more than one type of social media. So how can you use this in conjunction with your email marketing?

Within your email

Using social media is a great way to promote the marketing message in your email to a larger audience than just the original recipients. By sharing it on social media sites, recipients will be sharing it with peers who will be like minded and therefore more than likely to be your target audience.

Within MessageFocus, there are two different types of share link you can create in your email content:

Your campaign – recipients can share an anonymous web version of your campaign

Another URL – recipients can share a custom URL, for example a link to your website

This can be added as text links, or using the social media icons. For best practice, using the social media icons at the top of the email, above the header. This gives a cleaner look and the placement tends to encourage more shares as these are clearly seen in the preview pane. It is also a good idea to put some links to your social media sites at the bottom of your email as well. Like a “˜call to action’, putting these at the top and bottom ensures that recipients have maximum opportunities to share your email. Still not getting shares? Use our split testing feature to test different placement of your social media icons to increase shares.

If you don’t want to share your whole email, you are also able to customise your campaign for social media by adding conditional content to your email. This means that particular parts of your email content will only be displayed to people who have clicked to view your campaign via a social network. This can be great to encourage people to share particular stories within a newsletter, or to promote a competition or sign ups to a form within your email.

Reporting

Use the social tab in the reporting section of MessageFocus to see who has been sharing your email and on which social media sites:

This is a great indicator of whether you social media marketing strategy within email is working or not.
